Unique&Different Ways to Tour South Africa — Off the Beaten Track

Most South African tour companies sell the same handful of "classic" stops — Kruger, Cape Town, the Garden Route. We do something no generic operator does. We take you off the beaten track, and we build your entire itinerary around a single specialist theme, hosted and guided by someone who actually works in that field. Ten themed journeys. No two alike.

What "Off the Beaten Track" Actually Means on Our Tours

Off the beaten track is an easy phrase to print in a brochure, so here is what it means on our itineraries. Instead of the Kruger’s busiest southern gates, we use private reserves in the Greater Kruger, and the malaria-free Madikwe and Pilanesberg reserves in the North West. Instead of the standard Cape Town circuit, we head into the Cederberg, the Overberg, De Hoop Nature Reserve and the Karoo. Instead of a coach with forty strangers, you travel privately with a specialist who works in the field you came to see. On several of our routes you can go a full day without passing another tour vehicle.

Off-the-Beaten-Track South Africa Tours, Designed & Led by Field Experts

Experts in the Field — Not Generic Tour Guides

A family trip should be planned for how families actually travel. A rhino conservation trip should be run by a field researcher. We don’t just supply a driver with a general licence. Our host-experts bring decades of specialized research, professional equipment, and insider access that generic tour companies simply cannot replicate.

South Africa Tour FAQs

What makes your South Africa tours different from other operators?

We build every itinerary around a single theme and hand it to a working expert in that field. Most South African operators sell one product — the Kruger and Cape Town circuit — repackaged under different names. We built ten separate journeys instead: one for photographers, one for birders, one for conservation, one for families, one for golfers, and so on. The photographer's trip is led by a professional photographer. The conservation trip is run with field researchers. No two of our tours share an itinerary.

What does "off the beaten track" mean on your tours?

It means named places most itineraries skip. We use private reserves in the Greater Kruger rather than the busy southern Kruger gates, the malaria-free Madikwe and Pilanesberg reserves, and Western Cape areas such as the Cederberg, the Overberg, De Hoop Nature Reserve and the Karoo. You travel privately rather than in a coach group, and on several routes you will go a full day without seeing another tour vehicle.

Do you run family tours in South Africa?

Yes — and it is one of our ten specialist journeys rather than a standard tour with children added on. Our family safari uses malaria-free Big Five reserves, so no child needs anti-malarial medication. Guides are chosen specifically for their experience hosting children, game drives are shortened and made interactive for younger travellers, and accommodation is booked as family suites or connecting rooms. A family trip should be planned for how families actually travel.

Are your tours suitable for first-time visitors to South Africa?

Yes, though they suit a particular kind of first-timer. If you want a checklist of the country's greatest hits, a standard operator will serve you well and often more cheaply. Our journeys suit travellers who already know what they care about — wildlife photography, birds, conservation, golf, travelling with their children — and would rather go deep on that than skim the surface of everything.

Can I combine two themes in one trip?

Yes. Every journey is fully customisable, and combinations are common — photography with birding, golf with a family safari, wellness with the Whale Coast. Tell us the two things you care about and we will build a single itinerary that does both properly rather than splitting the difference.

How much does a specialist South Africa tour cost?

Every journey is priced individually because every journey is tailor-made — the cost depends on your dates, your group size, your choice of lodges and how much specialist access you want built in. We are not the cheapest operator in South Africa and we do not try to be; a professional photographer guiding you for eight days costs more than a driver. We will send you a complete, obligation-free itinerary and quote before you commit to anything.
